In a recent survey conducted on the campus of Indian School of Business (ISB, Hyderabad), the number of married women students has gone up to 11 for the year 2006-2007 from a mere two in the 2001-2002 batch. These figures are indicative of a new trend emerging on the education and relationship front. Many spouses are now willing to let their partners take time out of the relationship and marital responsibilities to fulfill educational commitments. So, what is it that propels these men and women to let their spouse continue with education even after marriage?
“Mostly it is the understanding that if my spouse has to do better in his or her chosen career and sometimes even achieve a certain academic distinction, then the process of studying has to continue,” explains Dr Bhavana Barmi, clinical psychologist, Escorts Heart Institute, Delhi. Neha Grover Lamba, who decided to study after an eight-year gap says that her husband stood by her like a rock when she decided to go B-school.
